Much more than a standard tour of Iceland. In addition to all the highlights, we stay in unique locations. Enjoy the nature and beauty in this magical country to the fullest.

Around Iceland – 13 days

The name says it all – we’re going ‘around’ Iceland! But we do not make just any round.

This trip has a series of highlights: Myvatn, the glacial lakes, the black beach at Vík, and puffins on the beautiful Dyrhólaey. All the waterfalls, you will encounter during this tour, can’t even be counted. We camp in exceptional and beautiful places, including the Skaftafell National Park. If you travel during June or July, you can experience almost 24 hours of daylight, which allows you to witness the stunning midnight sun. We’ll look for whales in Skagafjördur and relax in the natural springs. This trip shows you all the highlights of Iceland in 13 days. We guarantee you’ll come back again!

This trip is English-guided and accommodates up to 16 people.

Day 1

On an adventure!

After meeting your tour guide, we’ll drive to the Thingvellir National Park where your tent will be already set up for you. In the evening we’ll take a nice walk there. This park is a part of the Golden Circle and a place of great historical significance - in the past, new laws were created there as it used to be a residence of the parliament. Another special feature is that the Eurasian and Pan-American tectonic plates are drifting apart here. Fortunately, at two centimeters a year, you’ll hardly notice this. The setting of this place is simply wonderful - by the lake and among the mountains!

Camping Thingvellir

Day 2

Golden Circle

It is time for the rest of the Golden Circle! At Geysir, the Strokkur geyser erupts with a massive jet of water every 10 minutes, creating a breathtaking spectacle amidst the stunning surroundings.

After enough time at Geysir, we’ll drive a little further to the most beautiful waterfall in the southwest, the Gullfoss. We’ll view this two-stage waterfall from various places. When the sun is shining, there is almost always a rainbow to be seen. Then we’ll drive back a bit to end the day with a walk and a visit to one of our favorite waterfalls, Brúarárfoss.

Glamping Farmhouse

Day 3

South coast highlights

We´ll start on time and take the road to and along the south coast. This day consists of highlights only, amongst them: the Seljalandsfoss waterfall, where you can walk behind the waterfall, the impressive Skógafoss, the black beach and basalt formations of Vík, and the puffins at Dyrholaey. We’ll stay one more night at a beautifully situated Farmhouse. If the weather allows, we will light the BBQ tonight!

Day 4

Skaftafell

After we sleep in, we’ll take a nice walk through this area, between the glaciers. You can opt for as long (or short) walk as you want. You will surely enjoy beautiful views of Iceland's largest glacier, Vatnajökull, and views of the south coast.

When you come back, take the time to enjoy a delicious meal and the stunning surroundings! We’ll stay at a beautifully situated campsite in Skaftafell National Park near a waterfall, where you can take a pleasant evening walk.

Camping Skaftafell

Day 5

The Glacier Lakes

We continue our way to what many people consider the highlight of Iceland: the glacier lakes at the bottom of the Vatnajökull glacier. It is optionally possible to take a boat trip on the lake. We’ll spend a lot of time here before we continue to a campsite in a valley with several waterfalls. There are also plenty of opportunities here for an evening walk. You have been on the road for five days by now, but with so many experiences, it feels like a week!

Camping Skaftafell

Day 6

Borgarfjordur Eystri

We'll enter the relaxed town of Egilsstadir through a mountain pass and beautiful fjords to do the necessary shopping before we drive another hour to the most beautiful fjord in the east: Borgarfjordur. Dolphins and brown whales are regularly seen in this bay. The whole area is famous for its walks and the huge puffin colony.

Camping Fossadalur

Day 7

Storurd

As we hinted earlier, this area is known for its beautiful walks, one of which we are doing today. We’ll visit the bright blue lakes of Storurd surrounded by imposing boulders and the remains of a glacier. This is one of the most beautiful walks in Iceland, great for enjoying views and diversity. Shall we light the BBQ again when we arrive at the campsite?

Camping Stóra Sandfell

Day 8

Day off

There are several beautiful walks from the campsite, and it is also possible to rent an MTB. This day is a kind of day off, so staying at the campsite with a book is also an option! Or you can walk 250 meters to the coast to see if you are lucky enough to spot whales. It's up to you today. Of course, there is a possibility to do something together.

Camping Stóra Sandfell

Day 9

Myvatn

We head north towards Myvatn. First on the list is Studlagil, a beautiful gorge with basalt columns. Along the way we’ll have lunch at a beautiful waterfall which is nothing like the next waterfall; the Dettifoss. You will likely not forget the rumbling any time soon! We’ll drive to the campsite overlooking Lake Myvatn and visit another geothermal area. Tonight or tomorrow evening you can explore the natural baths near the campsite. A hot soak with a drink and a lakeside view. What else?

Camping Myvatn

Day 10

Myvatn

On today’s list are several highlights of Myvatn, with various short walks, including an enormous lava field, the pseudo craters at Skutustadir, and a gorge with warm water where you can bathe. We’ll also visit the geothermal area at the Krafla power station. There is also a beautiful crater here. The enthusiast can walk back to the campsite through a lava field.

Camping Myvatn

Day 11

Myvatn

Today you’ll have time for yourself. There are various options for walking, you can rent a bike at the campsite and cycle around the lake. There is an extinct volcano and a lava field to visit - we could go on and on. And if you've had enough, grab a book and enjoy the peace and quiet! It is up to you.

Camping Bakkaflöt

Day 12

Whale watching

After a delicious breakfast, we’ll leave for the waterfall of the Gods, the Godafoss. After that, we’ll drive to a family-run company for whale watching! This bay is very calm, so you don’t need to worry about getting seasick. Get the cameras ready, 99% of all trips saw whales last year! After this trip through a beautiful fjord, we can enjoy a nice meal at a small and cozy restaurant. We’ll spend the night at a campsite with two hot tubs near Varmahlid with a spectacular view of the mountains.

Camping Snorrastaðir Snæfellsnes

Day 13

To Reykjavík (with many stops)

Off to Reykjavík! Along the way, we’ll visit a beautiful peninsula in the north and the Hvitsekur rock, and then we’ll continue to a place with many seals. We also stop by a waterfall and many beautiful volcanic craters before arriving in Reykjavik.

You will still have plenty of time to explore Iceland's beautiful capital.

5/5

Domestic trip, cool experience!

Very cool experience, definitely recommended. Harm takes you to places inland where you probably wouldn't otherwise go and the landscapes are amazing. The tents and mats are also excellent, and with a nice group you can make it a fantastic two-week domestic trip!

Northern Lights trip with Local Adventures

Wonderful, pleasant, active trip through beautiful Iceland in the autumn. Very good price-quality ratio, many included, beautiful overnight stays at unique locations, small group and a tour guide who knows a lot about Iceland and therefore visits relatively undiscovered places in addition to the hotspots and can adapt the program flexibly.

Recommended! Tour Iceland with Local Adventures

Just returned from the 12-day camping trip Tour of Iceland with Harm / Local Adventures. What a wonderful journey through a beautiful country! Harm's passion and love for Iceland and for showing all the beauty the country has to offer - including some lesser-known gems - provided an extra golden edge to the already beautiful trip. The flexibility in the itinerary and the nice, relatively small group made it complete. Highly recommended!
