Trekking under the Katla Volcano – 3 days

The trek starts from the Katla Cave, and we will take the famous Road 1 to get there. We will cross a few ice fields and wade some rivers – but don’t worry, you will be more than safe with our professional guide. Our path conveniently leads us to one of the most impressive gorges in Iceland. At the end of the first day, we will reach a camping site in Þakgil. You will experience the stunning Icelandic nature firsthand, as we stay in tents during the trek. The views we will savor during the trek never cease to amaze. Eventually, we will descend to the green valleys of Presthil, where we will spend our second night. The final stretch brings us to Litlihöfði and then we come down to Farmhouse in Vík í Mýrdal. A South Coast tour with a Black Beach stop highlights our way back to Reykjavík.

We provide support for this trek – your luggage will be transported between the huts, allowing you to travel light during the day.

This trip is English-guided and accommodates up to 16 people.

DAY 1

Katla - Þakgil

The adventure starts on the famous Road 1. First, we drive along the south coast, passing beautiful places such as Seljalandsfoss and Skógarfoss, but soon we will turn to what seems like a no man's land. Stunning glaciers and mountains will surround us along the way. The Super Jeep has no problem taking on the rough, rugged road, but the drive is exciting nonetheless.

We will stop near the roots of the Kötlujökull glacier - the view that greets us is otherworldly. We will put on our crampons and helmets and walk to the ice cave's opening. We might need to climb a few steps on ladders to the cave entrance. As the natural ice cave constantly changes, conditions can differ on each tour. However, the climb is not challenging, and anyone in an average physical condition should be able to climb it.

We will start the trek from the Katla Ice Cave and walk through Þakgil Valley. We will walk the glacier strip with a view of the south, and our route will continue from Rjúpnagilii and over the Höfðabrekkäfrét down to a cabin there. Our path crosses one of the most impressive gorges in Iceland that rivers and glaciers have cut through time. You should bring wading shoes as we will need to cross two rivers on the way. We come down to a unique campsite in Þakgil in the evening, where we spend the first night.

DAY 2

Þakgil - Presthelli

Bright and early in the morning, we head from Þakgil to Sandá, where we cross the river and make for Sandhöfúd. We will start the descent from Heiðargil here. On the way, you can see Mýrdalsjökull, the fourth-largest glacier in Iceland, as well as Reynisfjörður and Mýrdalinn. During the descent to Vatnsdal, we will come across a large lake. If you are feeling brave enough, you can go for a dip. After that, we will walk further down to the green valleys of Presthelli, where we will camp.

Camping Dalaheiði

DAY 3

Presthelli - Farmhouse

Today we will walk from Stóra dal and to Gæsavatni by Vatnsdal where we will then walk down Lambhagann. From there, we will go down the gorge and Ford Hafursánn after which we will make our way to Steinbogan where we will continue our way down Stórhöfðann.

We then bend down towards Litlihöfði where we will see Búrfell, Pétursey, and a view to the sea. At the end of the day, we will come down to accommodation at the Farmhouse in Skeidflot.

A South Coast tour with a Black Beach stop highlights our way back to Reykjavík.

Domestic trip, cool experience!

Very cool experience, definitely recommended. Harm takes you to places inland where you probably wouldn't otherwise go and the landscapes are amazing. The tents and mats are also excellent, and with a nice group you can make it a fantastic two-week domestic trip!

Northern Lights trip with Local Adventures

Wonderful, pleasant, active trip through beautiful Iceland in the autumn. Very good price-quality ratio, many included, beautiful overnight stays at unique locations, small group and a tour guide who knows a lot about Iceland and therefore visits relatively undiscovered places in addition to the hotspots and can adapt the program flexibly.

Recommended! Tour Iceland with Local Adventures

Just returned from the 12-day camping trip Tour of Iceland with Harm / Local Adventures. What a beautiful journey through a beautiful country! Harm's passion and love for Iceland and for showing all the beauty the country has to offer - including some lesser-known gems - provided an extra golden edge to the already beautiful trip. The flexibility in the itinerary and the nice, relatively small group made it complete. Highly recommended!
