Here, we have compiled Iceland packing lists that will aid you in getting ready for your day hike or multi-day trek in Iceland.

What to Pack for Hiking in Iceland

Irrespective of the number of days you would be out trekking or hiking in Iceland, planning your Iceland packing beforehand is always a great idea. It makes sense to bring along the things you would need, but at the same time, you should avoid packing all the things you want during your Iceland hiking trip. This is because a superfluous burden can slow you down and make your journey tougher.

Standard Iceland Packing List

While preparing for a hike in Iceland, a major thing to consider is a “packing system.” You should think about the items you will put in your primary luggage as well as the things you will require during your trek or hike.

Iceland Backpacking Essentials

For the bulk of your trip, you would need a compact backpack – typically 25 to 40 – during the day. This will include your water bottle, lunch, rain gear, and other things you may require during the day, like extra clothing, medication, and sunglasses. For some hikes, you would require a pair of river-crossing shoes. The general suggestion is to keep one’s pack as lightweight as possible while carrying only the necessary things.

How to Dress for Hiking in Iceland

Dressing for an Iceland hike is nothing short of an adventure. You should factor in the following points for your clothing:

  • It is made of wind- and water-resistant material
  • It is capable of insulating your body from cold
  • It is flexible and lightweight
  • It can insulate the body even when wet
  • It is breathable, allowing moisture to escape
  • It is long-lasting and durable
  • It is compressible and packable

It is worth noting that no single piece of clothing can meet all the requirements above. So, what to wear hiking in Iceland? Well, the key is to find the most effective combination of clothing, to meet all these features. Dividing your clothing in three layers, viz., base layer, insulation cover, and outer shell, can help you optimize the performance of your clothing while minimizing weight and space.

Shoes and Extras to Consider

Your gear for hiking in snow is incomplete without hiking shoes and accessories that can help you keep yourself comfortably warm during your expedition.

Choosing the right pair of shoes for hiking in Iceland is particularly important. Your shoes must provide the necessary support, comfort, and stability. Plus, they must be able to keep your feet dry. Your Iceland hiking shoes must”

  • Have medium weight
  • Have medium stiffness
  • Be made of heavy-duty synthetic leather
  • Be waterproof

Scarpa, Columbia, and Salomon are among the most reliable shoe brands. While high-quality hiking boots are generally expensive, investing in them makes a lot of sense to ensure the safety and comfort of your feet.

In addition to your main Iceland hiking shoes, keeping an additional pair of shoes is recommended. You may also need river-crossing shoes for several tours, such as the Laugavegur Trail tour. For safe stream crossings, you would probably require an extra pair of shoes. Quick-drying trail runners, old sneakers, neoprene boots, or sandals (with straps) are your ideal options. Apart from top-quality footwear, you’ll also need:

  • Gloves
  • A wool hat for winter or a lightweight one for summer
  • At least 2 pairs of hiking socks.
